I know I was promising a post on the Chariot Races from last weekend on my facebook page, but I got a bit off course this week. So I’ll have to keep you in more suspense on the Chariot Races, but I’ve got other big news from the ranch.
The project I’ve been working on this week is a big one for the ranch. The Boss Man, Cowboy and I have been tossing ideas around for quite some time and we’ve come up with this…….drum roll please…..
We’re going public with our beef! I know, I know, that might not sound like a huge deal, but really it is. Here in our local community there’s been a huge interest in all things local, fresh, and natural. Well it just so happens that we’ve been eating fresh from the ranch meat for quite some time now. Most all ranchers do. It is a perk of being on a cattle ranch, beef!
The thing is, it’s also a rarity of sorts. Any good business man knows you don’t eat yourself out of product or profit! So while cows abound, beef doesn’t always flow out of a ranch hand’s freezer like water under a bridge. As most of the working family’s know, you hunt or find other meat to fill in the gaps (especially with grocery store prices). This is why this whole thing has been so exciting for us. We’re making natural, wholesome, hormone free beef available to the average person. No big organic food store price sticker required.
So we now have a Facebook page, Double D Beef and a website explaining more about our products, www.doubledbeef.com
It’s funny how things come about really. The Cowboy and I have been thinking of different ways to make an idea like this come to a reality for years and years. As luck would have it, The Boss Man has too! So now that we put all the brains together, here it is! I love it when a plan comes together! Haha
In other news, lambing has slowed down with the last 20 or so dragging it out to an annoying pace. We’re gearing up for calving, which should start in about 3 weeks or so. The Cowboy and I get to take off to a roping for a couple days before the calves show up. That will be a nice break before the chaos!
Somewhere in the midst of calving season, I’ll be making room for an addition to my yard……CHICKENS! I soooo essssssited. Yes, you have to say it just like that! As most things in my life, I’m picking my laying hens for both practicality and prettiness. Of course, I have to throw in some pointless and silliness by getting a couple that lay colored eggs! HA! The Cowboy just doesn’t understand……lol.
Anywhoooo, I’m also venturing into the world of butchering chickens. I want some to put in my freezer and now have orders from locals and family for all natural fryers, roasters, and stewing hens. (I’ve already decided that if I use any hens to stew, they’ll be the ugly or mean ones, lol) You’d better tread lightly if you’re a rooster too, I hate the mean ones. I think it’s time to share one of my favorite movie quotes…..
“I despise me a floggin’ rooster. Let’s put ‘im in a pot!” Cold Mountain
I love that part, but I doubt if I’ll ever be able to just pick up a rooster in one hand and ring his neck with the other. Eeww. The Cowboy always says I never would have made it 100 years ago on a ranch. He’s probably right. I guess we’ll find out come chicken butchering day. Don't worry, I'm sure I'll cry and be traumatized enough to tell you all about it! =)
By the way, Happy Valentine's Day!
